LEMON BLOSSOM BY FRAGONARD
A creation by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni

Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, a native of Grasse, crafted the Lemon Blossom Eau de Toilette and its variations for this exclusive collection by Fragonard. For this master perfumer, who has collaborated with the most prestigious fragrance houses, “the challenge was to design a perfume dedicated to this flower, even though it is not typically used in perfumery. It was, in a way, an extrapolation of fantasy: I had to imagine a fragrance evoking the lemon blossom by combining ingredients that, when assembled, would recreate the scent of this intoxicating white flower for the nose.”

"For Lemon Blossom, I wanted a very fresh perfume, with a transparent floral heart, a subtly woody and musky base, along with some fruity facets." Karine Dubreuil-Sereni

As she explains, the next challenge was to add longevity to the Lemon Blossom fragrance: “Citrus notes are extremely volatile and don’t last on the skin. It’s up to us perfumers to find a way to make them linger. That’s the role of the elegant base provided by Virginian cedarwood, white amber, and white musk. The goal was to preserve the vibrancy of the top notes while making them tenacious.”

TOP NOTES
Italian lemon, grapefruit, Argentine lime, Brazilian orange

HEART NOTES

Italian lemon tree petitgrain, wild jasmine, green apple

BASE NOTES
Virginian cedarwood, musk, white amber

ORIGIN

Lemon made its debut in perfumery at the end of the Middle Ages, when the first alcohol-based compositions emerged, and distillation techniques were mastered. Its essence featured in numerous "miraculous waters" crafted by monks, which were the precursors to colognes in the 17th century.

THE CITRUS WITH A THOUSAND LEGENDS

THE GLOBAL ASCENT OF LEMON

MENTON, A LEGACY OF GOLD

Called the "apple of the Medes" in the Persian Empire, it also bears the charming nickname "golden apple," a nod to the legend of Hercules in the Garden of the Hesperides. It is whispered that Nero consumed it in abundance to counteract the effects of potential poisoning and to protect himself from snake bites.

Originating 3,000 years ago in the Kashmir region, this citrus fruit later adapted to the climate of Mesopotamia, where the Hebrews learned to cultivate it during their exile in Babylon. The Arabs, captivated by its color and unique taste, promoted its spread across the Mediterranean basin from the 10th century onward.
In France, the lemon was brought back from Palestine by the Crusaders, finding its way into medieval cuisine as a seasoning and marinade. It was also used to combat successive waves of plague: incorporated into the Carmelite water of melissa, it helped purify the body. Its peel was even burned to ward off rodents whose fleas transmitted the disease to humans.

The fruit continued its travels under the sails of Christopher Columbus, who introduced seeds to the Caribbean. From there, it spread to the sunny lands of Florida and South America starting in 1492.

The Mediterranean region remains the emblematic hub of lemon production, with Spain leading the way, followed closely by Italy, home to six of Europe’s seven PGI-certified regions. The seventh is French: the region of Menton, a source of pride celebrated annually in February during the "Lemon Festival." Its fame is also tied to a legend: the people of Menton tell the tale that Adam and Eve, banished from paradise, took with them a freshly picked lemon, golden in color. Wandering the world in search of the perfect place to plant it, they set their eyes on majestic Menton, a fertile land that reminded them of their lost Eden.

THE LEMON BLOSSOM COLLECTION

In 2025, Fragonard celebrates the lemon blossom, a symbol of sparkling freshness. This citrus flower, with its invigorating scent, exudes delicate floral and citrusy facets. A luminous fragrance carried by the vibrant note of lemon tree petitgrain and the effervescence of Italian lemon, softened by Brazilian orange, the elegance of jasmine, and the warmth of amber.

While lemon essence is frequently used in perfumery, lemon tree petitgrain essence remains much rarer. In this composition, crafted like a haute cuisine recipe, Karine Dubreuil-Sereni has incorporated other citrus essences, including bergamot and grapefruit, for their sparkling quality.

Similar to its cousin, orange blossom, lemon blossom exudes soft, waxy, green, and powdery notes. This combination delivers a sensation of freshness and floral sensuality, highly valued in perfumery.
